I am an african american female who recently noticed that my hair has started to fall out strands a day and it looks very thin. What causes this and how can I stop it and rebuild my hair strength.

Take a good look at the strands. If there is a hair bulb at the end, then you should make an appointment with a good dermatologist. If it is only breakage, then a visit with a good hair technician would be in order. I find that during stress or the change of weather or even a change in our own bodies can bring on hair loss. Biotin can help stregthen hair, skin and nails.

Susan Evans, MD responded:
Dear myo4me,

Your first step should be to exclude any underlying medical issues or nutritional deficiencies that may be contributing to your hair loss. Thyroid disease, for example, can effect your hair growth.

If there are no medical issues then you should review your current hair care regimen. Overuse of perms, relaxers, and hair dyes will damage your hair follicles and lead to hair loss.

Optimum hair growth requires adequate nutrition for your hair. Certain supplements are required for keratin (the building blocks for your hair) production. Make sure that your diet is supplemented with magnesium, zinc, folic acid and biotin.

I also recently experienced hair loss and my doctor did what Dr. Evans suggested on here. Get blood work done. In my case, my thyroid was in major overdrive (hyperthyroidism) and I was put on a drug called Levothyroxine which helps stabilize the thyroid. It may NOT be your thyroid but a complete blood work can often uncover a lot.

I have noticed in the past few months that my hair is thinning and I have been taking additionaly supplements of biotin and zinc and folic acid... feeling somewhat like this is making it worse - Could I be overdoing it. I am healthy and eat healthy, the only thing I have changed is not exercising as much as I used to... would this cause a hair change?

Levothyroxin is given for hypothroidism (low levels of natural thyroid homone in the body). You are now supplementing your body's thyroid hormone. You had it backwards.
