"post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), lingering nerve pain after a shingles attack" I had shingles about two years ago and ever since there are times when parts of my skin feel like they are burn or stabbing pain when pressure from clothing touches it but it is not always in the same spots as where my shingles were. Does PHN only happen where shingles sores were or does it effect other places?

I know this sounds crazy but try an over the counter cream called Bacitacin. This will help. If you can't find the cream i mentioned then go to your local pharmacy and ask them where you can locate it in the store. Another product with this ingredient in it is the Neosporin Pain Relief. This should help. Put in on in the morning and at night for a week. If this doesn't help then i would recommend you go and see your doctor. But try what i said first. No, i'm not a doctor but i do work in the medical field. I hope this helps you. Good luck!

Glad you found Gabapentin for the pain. I use it for severe sciatic nerve pain in both of my legs. It is actually worse than shingles as shingles can go away, but the sciatic nerve pain I have doesn't. I call it the believe in God pain, cause if you don't believe in Him when you get it, you will because you will be praying to him to make the pain stop. I also take Elavil and Celebrex to help deal with the pain. Elavil works well to help build your tolerance to chronic pain. I would rather have shingles than the sciatic nerve pain and yes, I do feel your pain, every day for the past 22 years. Sometimes I can barely manage the pain, and other days, I simply suffer in silence. Shingles can come back. My Mom got shingles twice. Once when I was in Desert Storm and the second time when I went to Afghanistan, so if anyone says it doesn't come back, it does. No one told me she had it either time, but with shingles she had twice and sciatic nerve pain she had for two months, she doesn't know how I stand it. I hate to say it, but you actually get used to the pain. I have tried all kinds of medication and nothing ever makes it go away, even taking medication by IV. Don't want to be depressing, but hopefully more attention will be pain to this serious condition and there is a shot you can get to help prevent it. I made my Mom go get it as she is getting to old for that kind of pain. Hope it gets better and goes away and if not, then I will be praying for you and maybe you can deal better with the pain. Good Luck!

I mentioned earlier that Gabapentin works, as does Elavil to build tolerance for chronic pain. I also take Celebrex for arthritis, but it also helps with the pain. It takes a few weeks for the meds to work, but have your friend check with their doctor about the meds mentioned and see if they are right for he/she. Good Luck!

Vicodin does not work for me with sciatic nerve pain. It works well when I get a gallstone, but it doesn't work against nerve pain. I mentioned a few meds that work for me, but check with your doctor. I do hope it goes away and there is no permanent nerve damage, but keep looking for solutions. Maybe stem cell technology will help us in the not too distant future! Good Luck.

Dear Kifox,

Thank you so much for your advice- I completely agree. The nerve pain from shingles can be terrible- so no one should stop their medications without clearance by their MD.

There are new meds that can help repair the damaged nerves so you do not have to live with it Kifox.

I hope that helps
