Allergic reaction to Irish Spring?

Hi all! About three weeks ago, I bought a few bars of Irish Spring Icy blast soap for my boyfriend. He loves it and so do his two boys. I bathed them with the soap a few times the first week and a couple of times this week. Not this past Saturday, but the Saturday before, I started itching and a rash developed on my neck. I personally did not bathe with the soap as I am very sensitive to different soaps. I can only use Caress or I will itch. My neck area is very sensitive to anything. I cannot wear jewelry or earrings that touch my neck area or it will turn red, but I just put some Topicort on it that I use for my hands for eczema and it is normally fine. Well, this rash is different. It started with the itching and then turned to a few small linear patterns of bumps with itching. Someone told me that it looked like scabies, so I went to the doctor and he gave me Permethrin cream, but he did tell me that scabies is not normally found on the necks of adults. I used it last night just in case and of course this morning, the rash is like a 100 times worse. Well, I got to thinking about the soap and wondered if the rash could be from the soap. The smell of the soap is tremendous and lingers in the house for a while. I did not actually bathe with the soap, but I did come in contact with the soap while they were in the tub and on their skin out of the tub. I have also washed my hands with the soap this week as there was some laying on my bathroom sink. I have thrown all of the soap away now and gotten it out of the house, but does anyone think this could be the culprit even if I personally did not bathe with the soap. I did look at the boys today for any signs of scabies, but I didnt really see anything other than the normal places on the skin. The baby did have a couple of places on him that he had scratched, but i didnt see any burrows or any signs of scabies, etc.... Just trying to figure this thing out!!!

Hi there,

Please realize that it's not possible for anyone to be diagnosed over the internet. Rashes and bumps need to be seen by a doctor which you have done in order to get a diagnosis.

So there are 2 separate issues here. Do you have scabies and could you be having a reaction to the medication used to treat scabies.

Please read more about scabies by using the WebMD search engine. You can look up the medications you are using by clicking on the Find A Drug link to look up potential side effects as they may apply to you.

Do you have sensitive skin and is a fragrance and/or bar soap irritating your skin? Many people are sensitive to fragrances as well as the residue left by bar soaps. Try using fragrance free liquid cleansers such as those made by Cetaphil or Cerave to see if that makes a difference. Also try using fragrance free laundry detergents and leave out fabric softeners as the residues can also irritate skin.

Please see your doctor if your skin does not clear up.

I can also say that deodorant soaps cause me to have skin issues. I agree that the fragrance of Irish Spring is very pleasant and long lasting throughout a home after use but I can't even have it in the house as the fragrance is so strong and triggers my allergies. This also happens when I go down the detergent, bar soap, liquid cleaners aisle at the store. Any chance that your washcloth was used by someone else using IS soap?

It's the soap. I am allergic to Irish Spring soap as well. I used it when I was in college in my freshman year. At first, I thought it was because of the mosquitoes the night before - but then I realized it was the soap because the more I used it, the more it was worse. I started itching hardcore and was getting rashes everywhere. My face was bloated as well and my head was just huge....Never will I use that soap again!!!

I am not sure if Irish Spring is causing my issue, but I just bought the Irish Spring (24 Hour w/ Aloe) a few days ago, and since then, I have had a tons of puffy mosquito-looking bumps all over me (hives). It took me 5 days of itching to realize it could be this soap. It's worst in certain areas that I recall scrubbing the most. I can't wait to see if my theory is right.

I was blaming this on a Nascent Iodine supplement I started taking. After I stopped the iodine though, the bumps kept going. Irish Spring is looking very guilty!

I'm allergic to Irish Spring body wash and it gives me itchy hives. I discovered it has sulfate in the ingredients and I'm allergic to sulphur. It's possible you may have a sulphur allergy.
