My mother who is in her 70's has light red areas on the corner of her mouth. Has been there for around 2-3 weeks does burn a little but does not itch. What could this be?

Does she have deep folds at the corner of her mouth? Could be irritation from chronic moistness of saliva. Sometimes a yeast infection can be the culprit also. Try to keep it dry as much as possible (not easy to do).
