I have had eczema all of my life, so I'm pretty much use to it. I recently went to a make-up booth and had my makeup done. I told them NOT to use a age-defiance on me due to having eczema. Well they didn't listen and used it under my eyes. Now my eyes are suffering dearly for this. I can't control it and my eyes are starting to burn and have headaches behind them. Doctors have put me on steroids and an eye droppers. I found out that they were treating me for pink eye. I dont have pink eye. I'm a bride to be married in a year, but I'm worrying about scars and such. I am in so much misery and pain. Can some one please help me. I am at a loss.
thank you,

Dear Essie,

The delicate skin under the eyes is very prone to eczema flares as you describe. Once the skin is inflammed, it can lead to eye sensitivity and headaches. Do not worry Essie, you are not alone, I see many patients in my office with this exact condition and we can definitely help you!

First, I suggest consulting a dermatologist. As dermatologists, we are experts in the skin (and we will not mistakenly treat you for pinkeye).

In the meantime, stop all of the topicals you are using near the eye. Start using topical hydrocortisone 1% ointment. It is very important that you use the ointment and not the cream. This is because the ointment typically contains no preservatives, fragrances, or lanolin- which are common causes of allergic reactions. You can use a thin layer in the morning and a more generous layer at night. Over the counter anti-histamines such as zyrtec, claritin, or allegra may also help with the burning and itch.

Start this regimen right away and call your derm as the eyes are very prone to developing discoloration and thickening (the scientific term is "lichenification"). Once this occurs, it is much more difficult to treat.

Good luck with this and the wedding, we want your beautiful eyes to be center stage!!
