hello. i'm 16 years old, and i've had a few bumps on my lip in the same spot for...probably two years now, if not longer. they're on the left side of the edge of my upper lip. i went to a derm about a year ago, and she gave me some kind of medication for it. i remember the pills were huge and capsule-shaped. they smelled bad and tasted terrible. however, they did reduce the size of the bumps, but did not get rid of them completely. i just noticed this morning that i have one that is swollen and red. it looks like a blackhead, and it hurts. i really have no idea what it is and i really want them gone. please, anyone that can help, it's greatly appreciated!

P.S.: these bumps have never gone away completely. they get bigger occasionally, and look like blackheads occasionally. i did kiss someone with a cold sore a while ago. i got one too, but it went away i think..i don't remember if this is when it started or not. i don't think it was.

Mary Ruth Buchness, MD responded:
Dear bridgesandballoon07,
It's very common to get clogged pores on the edges of the lips. Sometimes they look like blackheads, and sometimes they get red and inflamed. You might need to go for a medical facial at a dermatologist's office to have them removed. What you describe is not related to cold sores. Don't kiss someone when you have a cold sore-you will pass it on to them.
