question re: possible cyst

I think I have a small sebaceous cyst in my groin area. I've noticed it for a couple of months now, but it's starting to bother me when I sit (it's kind of on my inner butt cheek!). I've read that they often just disappear on their own. Is this true?

Dear An,

Yes, small sebaceous cysts (medically referred to an epidermoid or epidermal inclusion cysts) can often resolve on their own. However, some lesions do need to be treated by an MD- either by incision and drainage, or a small surgical removal. Consult with your MD if the cyst is getting painful- that likely indicates that it is inflamed or more rarely, infected.

I hope that helps

Thank you for your reply. I don't have a doctor (or insurance), so I'm wondering how to go about this - is it a dermatologist I should call? It feels like it's gotten bigger and more red (inflamed?) in just the past two days.

Thanks again.

Dear An,

It would be advisable to consult with a board certified dermatologist. We medically (if you need antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication) as well as surgically (removal) are experts in the skin.

One tip would be to call the clinic at a University or hospital close to you as sometimes these places have free or low cost clinics.

I hope that helps
