Hi, my name is Darcy and I'm 15. I have a problem with my skin. After being in the sun even if it's for a little bit my skin becomes very itchy to the point that I scratch it so hard It take my skin off. I really want to know why this happens!

Dear Darcy,

Thank you for your question.

There are several conditions that can cause itching after sun exposure -- the most common being sun induced hives, an inflammation of the skin called polymorphous light eruption, and even mild forms of lupus.

A few questions:
-do you get hives, or just itching?
-is the itching worst at the beginning of the summer or is it pretty stable?
-do you or anyone in your family have any auto-immune conditions such as thyroid problems, diabetes, or vitiligo?

This is pretty common and I hope we can help you with this condition

yup as Tareen suggested it could be polymorphous light eruption. Other possible consideration are Solar urticaria (rare) or photoellergic eruption due to certain chemicals in your cosmetics or fragrances.

My skin gets itchy but not hives come. My family doesn't have any auto immune conditions. The itching is stable throughout summer.
