Alopecia Areota- abnormal regrowth

mikeconrad posted:
My first case of alopecia areota appeared@24 yrs of age. I've had several over the past 22 yrs. Only once was I treated with steroids, the first episode. The last episode the hair grew back white and never returned to normal pigmentation. This area of whiteness has now expanded abnormally @ 1000%. 10 x as large as the bald spot was . I was tested for Lupus, but the results came back negative. What is the reason for loss of pigmentation? It is on the back of my head.

Mohiba K Tareen, MD responded:
Dear Mikeconrad,

Alopecia areata is an auto-immune condition. Cutting-edge research is being performed at Columbia (my alma matter!) about why it develops - we are still unsure as to the precise etiology.

Given your rapid expansion of the alopecia areata, it would be prudent to see a dermatologist and have your thryoid checked (they can often be associated).

I hope that helps

Dear DR. Tareen, the rapid expanse is not of alopecia areata,it is of white hair. All of the regrowth of hair is complete. That regrowth is white in color. The expansion is not of alopecia areata, but of white hair. The affected area was the size of a quarter, the pigmentation(color)of regrowth is now the size off a softball. There is no more baldness, only expanding white hair. Is your answer still the same?
