I recently had total hip replacement 3 mos ago. I developed a quarter sized blister on that hip area about 5 days ago. After a hot shower the blister popped, I kept it covered with a large bandaid and triple antibiotic ointment. I noticed tonight that the area while hardened over has a slight red ring around the area along with......several small dark dots that look almost like freckles. I am currently taking Bactrim (antibiotic) as a precaution since the blister is very close to the surgery sight. There is no pain or itching, but the area is still numb & slightly swollen from the surgery. My question is .......are the small brown spots anything to be overly concerned about. Initally I think the blister was caused by the use of a heating pad, but the spots have me very concerned since they just appeared in the last 24 hours.

Dear An,

The brown may indicate a small amount of old blood that has oxidized. However, given the proximity to your hip site it would be advisable to call your ortho surgeon to let him or her know. They may want you to come in to make sure there is no deeper infection/ inflammation/reaction brewing.

I hope that helps
