I am 73 at every night around 2 a.m. my feet (or one foot) will start itching, It moves up to as far as my knee. I cannot get it to stop and it is stopping my sleep pattern at the same time. I am up for at least an hour applying regiular hand lotion until the itching finally stopsl I have HepC - could this be the reason? At times, my arms will itch but stops rather quickly. Would love to have some idea what's going on..
I will be starting the treatment program very soon for the HepC

Mohiba K Tareen, MD responded:
Hepatitis C (as well as the medications to treat it - which you will soon hopefully start!) can lead to abnormal nerve sensations, including itching.

Try a great over the counter cream called Sarna (or its generic equivalent) and see if this soothes the itching. Also try some benadryl at night (if ok with your doc).

If after 2 to 4 weeks you are experiencing no relief, please discuss with your Hepatologist.

I hope that helps
