    Exciting News for WebMD Members!

We've been busy behind the scenes building new message boards for you. You'll have new and easier ways to find messages, connect with others, and share your stories.

And, this will all be available on your smartphone or other mobile device!

What Do You Need to Do?

The message board you're used to will be closing in the coming weeks. While many of your boards will be making the move to our new home, your posts will not. Want to keep a discussion going? Discloration Of Bottom Lip
    An_252046 posted:
I am African American and a couple of years ago my bottom lip began to show a tiny patch where the pigment has disappeared leaving a pink spot where the pigment once covered the lip. It has gotten a little bigger over time and looks like the pigment is wearing away. This is the only place on my body where this has happened. I am otherwise healthy. What could be causing this and is there some sort of treatment available? It is beginning to make me self-conscious.
    Mohiba K Tareen, MD responded:
Lower lip discoloration can be due to inflammation (a process known as post inflammatory hypopigmentation) vs an auto-immune skin condition called vitiligo. It is very important to have this checked as we do not want either condition to progress! The treatment would be different based on which disorder it is.
