Hello Everyone, Hope all is well w/ you all. Not too sure if I'm in the right Discussion Community for my question, if I'm in the wrong group, Would someone direct me in the right direction?? I would appreciate it dearly.

OK, My Hubby has been on Xanax for a year & a half now & as of mm, 3-4 days ago, he quit taking them..(????) & now he can't sleep. He went to getting off the Xanax to taking unisom instead & that don't even put him to sleep nor keep him asleep.

My question is, With him stopping the Xanax after being on them for a year & a half, Could this be his problem to why he's not falling asleep or if he does fall asleep he's right back up 30 minutes later..(???)

I know i had read somewhere that being on Xanax for a period of time might or can cause withdraws. Is that true??? He's not sick, shaking, sweaty etc...none of those, He just Can't Sleep..This didn't start until he quit taking the Xanax.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated if anyone is Interested.
Thanks In Advance
Have a Great Day!!

Dear butterfly_gurl,

How about calling and asking his pharmacist if going off Xanax without tapering down can cause sleeplessness or insomnia? If the pharmacist can't give you answers, I'd suggest your husband see his doctor and talk it over.

It specifically says about Xanax , "This medication may cause withdrawal reactions, especially if it has been used regularly for a long time or in high doses. In such cases, withdrawal symptoms (such as seizures) may occur if you suddenly stop using this medication. To prevent withdrawal reactions, your doctor may reduce your dose gradually. Consult your doctor or pharmacist." This is really something he should have talked over with his doctor first before discontinuing. I'd suggest he get his doctor's advice now.

Yours in health,

Byroney

Hi Byroney_WebMD_Staff,

Thank You for your reply. I will definitely do what you have suggested in your reply come this morning during Normal Business Hours.

It didn't even dawn on me about how severe the Withdraw symptoms can be. (Ex. Seizures etc...). Not good. Scary. This is nothing to play with.

Thanks again for your Suggestions & getting back w/ me quickly, I appreciate it your help.

Have a Great Sunday!!
