Compulsive Yawning

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but since there aren't any "yawning communities" haha...

I've always yawned a lot, but over the past few years it's become out of control. I have almost what you'd call yawning 'attacks' which can sometimes last up to an hour of repeated yawns one right after another.

I get the average amount of sleep, and sometimes much more than needed but neither seems to affect the yawns. They happen even when I otherwise feel perfectly awake and fine.

The only thing I've noticed that seems to stop these attacks is drinking hot drinks. I assumed it was the caffeine, but it doesn't help if they are cold versions, it really seems like it is the heat that is helping more than anything else.

Wondering if anyone has any insight. Seems like a really silly thing to go to a doctor for, but it's gotten to the point where it's really inconvenient and embarrassing, plus I'm worried it could be a side effect of an underlying problem.

Dear Anon_144241,

What an interesting question. I poked around and found out that Dr. Breus, our Sleep Well blogging expert, did an entire posting on What's in a Yawn? He explains what a yawn is, why we yawn, and how many times during a lifetime the average person yawns (I was shocked at the number!)

Ultimately though, once you're done with the article, you'll probably need to run it by your doctor to see what can be done with it since it's becoming inconvenient and embarrassing for you.

Let me know if you're as surprised as I was by the lifetime number of yawns,

Byroney

I do not mean to alarm you, but please talk to a doctor. I have type 1 diabetes and my husband and I have noticed over the past 10 years or so that whenever my blood sugar is either too high or too low, I yawn and yawn and yawn. It has almost gotten to be our warning sign.

Go to a doc and make sure your blood sugar is okay. If it is, I would look at the possibility of a sleep disorder.

Hi Dezi,

Other than the responses here (which I hope you find helpful), I'm not sure you'll get any more on this particular discussion as it was begun over a year ago and the member who began it all may no longer be posting here.

You may want to start a new discussion on the board so others can more easily find you and respond. To do that, hold your cursor over the orange Post Now button and choose 'Discussion' from the drop down menu which appears. Fill in the subject line and body of the message and Submit.
