Sleep Study

This may sound really stupid but I had a sleep study done a while back & take ambien every night for sleep. Well, they had me take my ambien the night of the study. What I don't understand is, how would they know what is causing my inability to fall asleep on my own if I was sleeping during the study? Do you think I should'nt have taken my ambien that night? I do not have restless leg or sleep apnea.
