I can only sleep for 3 hours at a time

Over a year and a half ago I was studying Europe. I went out a lot and didn't get a lot of sleep. I came back to the US and couldn't sleep for longer than 3 hours at a time. I would fall asleep around 1am, wake up at 4, and then sleep again from 430-730. The same pattern has stayed with me since then. I haven't gone to a doctor, but have tried alternatives such as melatonin and others. Nothing seems to work. I am going to try and go to a sleep study soon. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
