Continual Muscle Jerks in Sleep

My husband suffers with continual muscle jerks in his sleep. He is exhausted during the day. I assume this is from lack of a resting sleep. I suffer from lack of sleep. His continual punching and kicking during sleep keeps me awake as well. I have begged him to go to the doctor. It is always alternating limbs. When the left leg kicks the right arm punches. It is so violent that the bed jerks waking me. Any suggestions as what may be the problem. Any suggestions as how to get him to go for tests. Please advise. Desperate. He does not go to a "family doctor". He has had corneal transplants and has "reserved" parking with his ophthalmologist for the past 15 years. Any advice?
