How to Live with a Family Member who Smokes

When I was about 7 or 8 years old, my mom's uncle used to smoke all the time. I used to try to get him to stop but he wouldn't. Even though I loved him to death, I couldn't STAND the fact that he would smoke while my family and I would visit him. I would sit on his lap and say, "Uncle Dean, will you ever quit smoking?" He would tell me yes, but in the end he didn't. When he died and my grandfather was given Uncle Dean's flag, I realized that it was too hard for him to stop because of how long he had smoked-he started when he was 17, as a POW in WWII.

Hiya and welcome!

That is a good question and it's not easy to live with anyone that smokes!! All we can do is ask them to be curtious. Smoke outside, keep the house smoke free. Talking is the best resource. It's all we can do, and I sure do feel for you having to be around that, and from the other side it's so difficult to quit especially if one doesn't want to, and it sounded like your uncle never did want to quit at all.
