Smoking cessation in the Elderly

Can anyone answer this question or direct me to find the answer? What are the effects of an elderly person going cold turkey when trying to quit smoking? He is 82 yrs old and has been smoking since age 19. He is very close to being place in an assisted living facility that is a smoke free campus. He will not be allowed to even smoke outside. When we approached his doctor about it, he said come back and talk to me when he gets placed. I'm thinking at that point its gong to be to late.
