Muscle spasms after shoulder surgery.

I just recently had shoulder surgery a little over two weeks ago. The arthritis in my shoulder was so bad that it limited my movements and caused a lot of pain. They went in and cleaned out the arthritic spurs etc. and had to cut a little over an inch off my collar bone to get a 5mm tool in to do so. I had a small rotator cuff tear but it was in the muscle and the doctor said it didn't need fixing.

My range of motion and pain is improving daily but this morning I was driving and all the sudden I had a muscle spasm in my shoulder right at the site of surgery and it just would not go away. I had to pull over and let my husband drive. I massaged it, stretched it which made it worse and tried everything I could think of to get it to go away. Every time I though it was over I would move and it would start again. This lasted almost over an hour and it quite literally made me sick the pain was so bad. When we got home I laid down and took a muscle relaxer and it eventually went away. My shoulder is so sore and tight and it just feels like it might do it again. Why would this happen and what can I no only relieve it if it happens again but keep it from happening again?

Hi staraz,

Wow! Well, it sounds like you had quite a bit of work done not too long ago. What did your doctor say about recovery time? Have you called him/her about these side effects? Have they been going on lately? I look forward to hearing more and hope that things are more comfortable for you.
