    Exciting News for WebMD Members!

We've been busy behind the scenes building new message boards for you. You'll have new and easier ways to find messages, connect with others, and share your stories.

And, this will all be available on your smartphone or other mobile device!

What Do You Need to Do?

The message board you're used to will be closing in the coming weeks. While many of your boards will be making the move to our new home, your posts will not. Want to keep a discussion going? Save posts you want to continue (this includes your member profile story), so that you can re-post them in the new message boards.

Keep an eye here and on your email inbox, we'll be back in touch soon to give you all the information you need!

    Seeing flickering lights in vision

I've tried looking this up online, but can't seem to find anything that answers my problem.

For the last couple of years, I've noticed that whenever I look sideways, then back to the front, I have flickering lights in my vision field. They look like they're white lights that move around and they last for about 10-15 seconds.

Does anyone know what this is? And should I be concerned?

I know exactly what this is as I have been diagnosed with the same problem. Some of the "vitrious gel" in the eye has leaked onto the surface of the eye causing the lightning flashes in your periphial vision. You may also notice black dots in your vision and/or worm-like streaks appearing. You need to be checked by an opthomologist to be sure you are not in danger of having a "retinal detachment." Use your search engine to find "symptoms of retinal detachment" to help you better understand. I was told that so far my retina is fine, but the lightning flashes, worms and dots will be with me the rest of my life (I'm 56). My healthy eye is working twice as hard so I end up having more migraine than I ever had before and those are bad enough.
I wish you well and hope you find a good eye-care specialist that can keep you better informed. My thoughts are with you!

Thanks for replying! I've definitely noticed the worm-like streaks and I'm prone to migraines as well. Googled your suggestion and it looks very familiar. I'll get it checked out.

    Thanks again!!
