    Post-Stroke Patient Stopped Talking
    Debtn posted:
After my mom's stroke, 2 months ago, she could still talk & you could have a conversation with her. Four days ago she just stopped. May say one word but thats it. Not sure what has caused this. She has been eating 2 meals a day & was to go up to 3 meals a day & get out feeding tube 8-1-2011. Any ideas, why she has just stopped talking & eating. Thanks for your help.
    Richard C Senelick, MD responded:
I think the first thing you need to do is establish whether she has had an extension of her prior stroke or developed a new stroke. I would get her in to see her physician as soon as possible.

People who have had a stroke can be very sensitive to other things going on with their body. Infections or depression can make their symptoms much worse. Again, her physician can help sort this out. If you cannot get her seen in a timely fashion by her regular physician, I would take her to the emergency room.

    Good Luck.
After your stroke you may be experiencing a new normal, but remember what George Eliot said- It is never too late to be what you might have been. You still can achieve new goals.
Debtn replied to Richard C Senelick, MD's response:
Had infections checked, urine & CBC all okay. She had a UTI, but it is all gone now. We were thinking maybe another small stroke but given the timeframe, her stroke with extension was May 14 thru May 31, or so we were told. She just stares into space all the time & if she does say anything at all its one word & then quite again. I am really worried, as is the staff at the SNF she is at.
