Young and recently had stroke
kbtris25 posted:
I recently had a stroke, a tad confused about it, in my early 30's and i really don't feel like me. Except when i am in water bathing. i am a bit confused and scared but my family history has set me up for a lot to come. I have high blood pressure and cholesterol, i smoke, i work long hours and i really don't eat well. And loads of stress at work. i guess is no wonder this happened. Can i get some real advise. Do you ever feel normal again? And What now?
Richard C Senelick, MD responded:
The most important thing is to get a complete evaluation and determine the "exact" cause of why you had a stroke. You are awfully young to chalk it all up to bad habits and bad genes. Make sure the doctor's make sure you do not an abnormality in your heart that can lead to clots going to your brain or a clotting disorder in your blood. You are too young to just ignore all the rare possibilities. If nothing unusual is found, then it is your turn to eat well, stop smoking, exercise, and tightly control your blood pressure and cholesterol. If you do things, you will feel better. Good Luck
After your stroke you may be experiencing a new normal, but remember what George Eliot said- It is never too late to be what you might have been. You still can achieve new goals.

I had a stroke almost three years ago at the age of 32. Thanks to wonderful rehabilitation services I can walk again, use my left hand, and I even regained a chunk of my lost visual field. I tell people that there isn't anything I could do before that I can't do now. It is different but I have found my new normal. Being a stroke survivor is no longer on the front of my mind all the time. The best advice I can give you in your recovery is to make sure you have access to a quality psychologist as part of your rehab. There is a grieving process associated with store recovery and having a sounding board really helps. I hope you are doing well in your recovery.
