The magazine's editors are now collecting nominations for our 2011 winners. Please submit your entry by Friday, August 12. It's easy -- just go to our Health Heroes page (www.webmd.com/healthheroes ) to find the nomination form.

Once there, you can also read about past winners -- we choose about four to six each year, and all receive a check to donate to their favorite health foundation or charity. They also appear in both the November/December 2011 issue of WebMD the Magazine and online at WebMD.com.

Who's a hero? He or she can be a doctor, nurse or patient who has in some way dealt with a serious health challenge, then given back to others in an inspiring way.

I look forward to reading your nominations!

Colleen

Dear Colleen,

I understand that you are looking for a "hero" who has done wonders for their community but I need to nominate my individual hero. My hero is Dr. Mary Macedonio.
Please bear with me as I explain. I have always suffered from minor depressive episodes. Aproximatley two years ago I lost my job as a mortgage underwriter due to the economy. That was the beginning of the near end for me. I also have health issues that were worsening thus heading me into a downward spiral and ultimely ending me in a severe depressive state near suicide. Through the workings of the universe Dr. Mary was brought into my life. I have been in therapy in the past but never experienced the results that I am having now. I have been seeing Dr. Mary for the last four months. I have never seen the improvement through my other therapists as I see it with her. After reviewing journal entries from as recent as November of last year where I was borderline suicidal I am now looking forward to my life and how I can participate in improving the quality of it. Dr. Mary's approach is to treat the whole person not just the current mental disorder. I am now on the right track to complete health, mental and physical. To wrap this up, without Dr. Mary's help and direction I dont know where I would be even a year from now.

This is why Dr. Mary Macedonio is "My Hero"!!

Sincerely,
Phyllis Alsterberg
