I had my first DVT at 18, I was on birth control pills at the time and was told Hormone contraceptives are not for me. I was treated with heparin and coumadin for about 3 months and then I was fine. Fast forward to age 25, I was pregnant with my first child and during a prenatal visit gave my medical history and was told I'm high risk due to previous DVT. I was placed on lovenox for entire pregnancy and 6 weeks after. Everything went fine. Age 28 had my son and again everything went smoothly. 2 days after delivery I discussed my options for contraceptives with my doctor, I wanted to tie my tubes but the doctor suggested the depo-provera shot. I said no way, I was told to stay away from birth control, reminded him of my history of clots and he assured me the depo shot is safe for me. He said the shot does not have estrogen which is the hormone that makes you clot.Wrong! Anyways he offered to double check which he did and assured me it's safe and prob my best option. So i took the shot. About 4 weeks later my left groin area was completely swollen, I couldn't walk so I went to the ER and I had a DVT and Pulmonary Embolism. I was hospitalized for almost two weeks. It has been so devastating, my son was less than a month and I had to leave him. I was hooked up to a heparin drip and had a Catheter-directed Thrombolysis as well as an IVC filter put in. Then I was placed on coumadin to reach a therapeutic INR, 3 days later I had another clot. I had to repeat the treatments and this time kept on a higher dose of heparin and coumadin. It took about 2 weeks before I got to 2.0 INR and 12mg of coumadin and 80mg lovenox(2x). It has been 2 months and I had my IVC filter removed last week and it was clogged so they replaced it. It's a struggle my entire body has been affected, my heart, liver, blood pressure, cholesterol the list goes on... Very scary, I have two young children who need me. What I am trying to accomplish is to spread some awareness, to educate about this condition. Had I been more educated no doctor would have talked me into taking that shot considering my previous history. I have created a group on facebook and I hope you will join me in spreading the word and sharing your stories. You never know who you might save.
