Any benefits to surgery?

Since being diagnosed a year ago, I've fluctuated back and forth from hyper to hypo. It doesn't appear to be stabilizing and the symptoms are affecting every part of my life - is there any benefit to killing the thyroid and taking meds the rest of my life? Perhaps that would be better than this constant battle for a regular life.
