I'm a Pumper

Hi, I've been pumping for about 16 yrs now. My pump is the Medtronic Minimed. It's the only one Kaiser Permanente will help pay for. I do like it very much. It's better than 5-6 shots a day and my latest A1c was 6.4. Only problem is I have a profound hearing loss so the "beep" warning is useless to me and the "vibration" warning is too as I wear it on the outside of my pants at the waist and can't feel it. I guess I could stuff it someplace else...LOL.

Congrats on the pumping longevity. Have you thought about putting it in a pocket? You might be able to feel it that way. I always wore it in the side band of my bra and had I used the vibration mode I would have felt it.

I keep my pump in my pocket and quite often don't feel the vibration. And I don't have hearing loss and I still cant hear the alarms...they need to make them louder!!!

Sorry, I don't have much advice for you. do you get alarms often? I make a habit of keeping an eye on my battery status and cartridge level so I know when an alarm might happen. Also, I test often, so if there was a no delivery alarm, my blood sugar would probably reflect it before it even happened.

Ditto. If you test often then you should be able to keep an eye on things. But I do agree with you. I wear the Minimed too. The alarms are very soft. I do have to admit that I have often went to bed thinking that I would wake before I run out of insulin. The beeping and vibration has NEVER woke me up. I hate to waste insulin but I also hate to run out when I'm sleeping so now I just change out before bed if I have less than 30 units... (that seems like alot but I use 4.0 and hour. And even that seems like alot but I'm double diabetic.)

have a mini med and from kaiser.and my pump gust gave up last nigh while i changed it and now it think it still needs to prime, so we are getting a new one. how old is it might be over. because some times it will get old and start giving up with one thing at a time, it did the same to my friend and it later stop working.

Ive had my minimed pump since 98. I typically wear it in my waist on vibrate. Another option would be to simply make a schedule to look at your pump every half hour...etc. Good luck
