It's sad to read about this type of "Discrimination" but unfortunately its not really the type of discrimination you think. I am disabled with a number of degenerative problems and finally after many years, I got Medicaid a little over a year ago. I thought my worries were over but I was only fooling myself. I am a white male in mid-50s and most everything I try to get help with is turned down because I am not a minority, no longer have young children, don't qualify for women's health programs... etc.
I also went back to college and was doing very well with a GPA of 4.0 until after a couple of years my health deteriorated so that I could not continue my re-education. All I got out of the whole deal was substantial debt, a begrudged level of healthcare that is totally inadequate for my situation, and ever increasing health challenges. TOO OFTEN, insurance companies both private & governmental are hopelessly inadequate.... they love grabbing the money, but when you need something in return, they prefer that you just lay on the scrapheap.
P.S. There is no means available for a Medicaid member to speak to anyone in Medicaid for info on potential treatments, prior-authorizations etc... They have removed the ability to contact by phone, email, postal mail etc... now it is only possible to get a message to them through one of their 3rd party contractors (e.g. Hewlett Packard) and then after much time waiting with no response, I guess the member is just meant to give up and climb back under a rock or onto the scrapheap! I used to complain occasionally about the diminishing level of customer service over the years but now that I am left with NO customer service, the outlook is indeed, bleak!
