Living With One Lung Long Term

SaltHands posted:
I have lived nearly 55 years with one lung. I would like to compare notes with someone that has a similar experience. My entire left lung was removed shortly after my birth in 1956. I was told the lung was filled with cysts and did not function properly.

Hi SaltHands,

If you currently have any breathing problems then our WebMD Allergies Community and our WebMD Asthma Community may be the place to start with your questions.

Both communities have related health centers which you can also find linked on those boards to read WebMD articles that may be helpful to you too.

Annie,

Thank you for your suuggestion. I will take a look at the areas you mentioned.

I don't have questions about specific health problems, but I'm interested to know if other people living long-term with only one lung have experienced the same issues that I have - shifting of internal organs, interstitial lung disease, heart block, postpneumonectomy syndrome etc.

Hi SaltHands,

Searching this WebMD site I could not find specific information. One of our other sites, Medscape, has this information -

Postpneumonectomy syndrome in children: advantages and long-term follow-up of expandable prosthesis.

And this, from a site not connected with WebMD, so content can not be guaranteed -

Post Pneumonectomy Syndrome

Check with the Thoracic surgeons in your area, they may be able to connect you with others having similar symptoms.

Hope this is helpful,
Elizabeth

Hello -

I underwent a right pneumonectomy in 2009 at the age of 27 due to a congenital lung defect. I was recently diagnosed with post pneumonectomy syndrome and am considering surgical intervention to relieve my shortness of breath and stridor on exertion. There's not a lot of information out there as there seems to be so few of us!

Hi SaltHands, I know your post was a long time ago but I wanted to see if you could help me. My son had a left pneumonectomy when he was 2 1/2 for a congenital vein issue in his left lung. He is 8 now and I was just wondering how your childhood, etc was/has been in respect to severity of colds, how often you would get sick, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc? Just would like to know what others have experienced so I can better understand what is expected, etc. He has done overall well its just that when he gets sick it always goes straight to his chest and it takes a while for his chest to clear. Anyway, hope you or someone similar is still out there. There is hardly any info or groups out there about pediatric pneumonectomy patients.
