Why did I feel pain during my MRI?

froggsong posted:
Hi, I'm not really sure where to post this question, and I cannot get in touch with my doctor until Monday. I have been scouring the internet, and I cannot find ANYTHING that says anything other than I should not have felt pain during my MRI scan (it was of my abdomen). I told the technician when I came out that it made me feel sick and hurt, and I was shaking like a leaf. (I was NOT feeling claustrophobic AT ALL, I LOVE to be in enclosed spaces, so as far as that went I was great, also, the table was fairly comfortable.) At one point, I thought I was going to have to have him take me out because I thought I was going to throw up. It felt like my insides were twisting around, and it still feels that way to a certain degree almost two days later. The tech acted like it was no big deal, but if it isn't supposed to cause pain (and from what I've been reading I shouldn't have even been able to feel it) do I need to go to the ER or something? I had the scan done to try to diagnose severe abdominal pain, and it had subsided for days longer than normal before the scan, and it started hurting again during the scan and now constantly hurts (not severely, but enough to be very uncomfortable). The area of the pain is also larger now. I had my gallbladder removed when I was 15 or 16 (I'm now 22), what if they chipped a scalpel or something, would that have been moving around in there or something? I am worried because it made me VERY sick feeling. I could feel the magnets throughout my whole body, but mostly in my abdomen and more concentrated in the pain area. The longer the scan went on, the worse it felt. I didn't have a panic button and he didn't tell me I could just talk to him if I needed to, so I didn't know I could tell him it was hurting. The pain I feel now is different than the pain I was feeling before too. I am very worried. I can't find ANY instances of people feeling pain during MRI scans anywhere online, and like I said, I can't contact my doctor until Monday. I know you guys aren't doctors and can't diagnose things or anything, but you may have better resources available to you to find out if I should go in to the ER. Hopefully I get a response to this before Monday. Anyway, I guess I want to know if I should go in to the ER since I am still hurting from the scan (and it is not back pain, it is abdominal pain). Thanks for your time.

I'm not sure why you were feeling pain during your MRI. I hope you can get some answers from your doctor.

Hi

I do not know why either. It is important that you see a doc. Did you have anything metal, like a belt buckle on you. Anything metal would cause pain.

I had an MRI last night on my legs. I possibly have a ACL injury and they want to know the extent of that injury. Though out the entire test my skin felt as I had a painful case of goose bumps or little needles were pricking my skin in waves. It was uncomfortable and I continued to experience it through the night. I do have a copper T IUD in place, but they said that was OK. Once I got home and explained my discomfort I wasn't aware that I should have felt nothing. Everyone keeps saying that there is no pain associated with the test. I am feeling very helpless and as being crazy at mentioning I felt anything at all. As a side note, I had an EEG about 3 months ago and felt ill after. Very dizzy and nauseous. I called my PCP and was told that nausea is not a symptom of an EEG. I called the neurologist and he when he called back after looking at the results, he said that I have a brain condition which my brain waves mimic the movement of light. So while most people don't become ill, I do and that is normal for me. Maybe there is such a condition where electrical waves effect some people but not most? I don't know... but I hate feeling as I imagined something.

How awful for you! But one thing to remember - if there WAS something left in there as you fear, it would have shown up on the MRI.

I've been looking for a long time someone else who felt pain during a mri.i was also told that it couldn't be so.for years i've been looking for someone to understand me.i had my gall bladder removed.the pain from the mri was excruciateing.i yell for help but no one was there.ithought i was going to pass out.after wards they looked at me like i was crazy. after that the pain in my side got worse and it stood worse.i believe it was the magnets.before the mri i had this pain in my side when someone tried to touch my side(right side)i could feel energy coming from their hands like maybe eletricity or something like that.then i would be in pain.i didn't have to be touched.why does my body react to this electricity for lack of a better word why does it react to the magnets?why is it only on my right side abomain.i was surfing the net cause like i said i had my gall bladder removed 6 years ago now the pain has come back and the feelings with the electricity and the magnets has come back

Hi lady, Do you have any tattoos? Some older tattoos use ink pigments that may have contained metal. That is something you may want to think about and discuss with your doctor if necessary. Aso if you've ever had surgery is it possible that any metal or metal staples were left inside you? Please discuss this with your doctor. Good luck! - Annie

Annie, lady e here ,idon't know about froggsong but i have no tatoos. she like i felt the pain with the mri when she got checked for her gallbladder.the pain was already there from the symptoms of the condition but the mri made it severe, severe to the point i was going to pass out .the connection i feel is that something in our abdominal area is causing this reaction but no i didn,t swallow any forks as a kid.my gallbladder was removed as hers but the pain returned like hers my mri was before my gallbladder removal hers was after.mine was removed because it was rotten, what ever that meant ,i was to ignorant to understand at that time and glad to be rid of it.ifeel reaction to static electicity,it makes that side hurt.since the pain is back im going to the doctor,i alwys felt there was more to it than my gallbladder. thanks froggsong proved it true

When I was done I was sick and thought I was going to throw up and I was dizzie and almost passed out. I have not been the same since. I have not found anything to explain how I feel either, but wanted you to know you are not alone.

I just had an MRI yesterday for a torn ligament in my thumb, and I was searching the internet because I too had ovary pain (only on my right side) enough pain/discomfot to question it. The discomfort started when the MRI started and ended when the MRI ended. I guess I was just ovulating or close to it.

I had almost the exact same pain last night, in almost the exact same spot. I was having an MRI done on my lower back and I was getting a burning-like pressure sensation in the area of my right ovary. I'll have to check with my doctor to see what could have been the problem. I'll be sure to post on here if I find anything that could answer any of our questions. I just hate when things like this happen because people look at you like your crazy!

I have had MRI's every year since 2006, with two in 2006. I never had a problem as they were brain MRI's, I think. This week I ha an MRI for my neck and spine and the pain was horrible. It wasn't because of my position as they gave me something to put my knees up. It was really strange but when I heard certain noises, I felt stabbing in my head. I could talk with the tech. and he let me out to take a break which was nice. When I went back in, I tried telling myself it was all in my mind but when the MRI was working on my neck again, the pain returned severely and I ended up with a bad migraine. It didn't hurt when it was taking pictures of my lower spine. I'm thinking that the vibrations from the machine do something?

I have experienced the same... I think you are all electromagnetically sensitive people. There are many sources of info including a conference coming up in texas June3-6th. I recommend you read about electromagnetic sensitivity , or electrical sensitivity.

I had to reply to your post because I just had an MRI done this morning and I had the exact same pain. I literally felt like my intestines were moving around and that there HAD to be damage from this because it hurt so bad. When I told them about the pain they looked at me like I was crazy. I felt so bad after the test that I had them admit me to urgent care. I still have pain even as I write this.

Over the last year I have had I don't even remember how many MRIs, too many obviously. And starting with the first one I noticed that something wasn't quite right. That one was on my neck and back but I could feel it heat my arms up on the inside. It burned like fire and I went home with a terrible migraine. I already knew from previous tests I had nerve damage in my arms. the technician told me that the magnets do produce low levels of heat but that most people cannot detect it. Well, of course I am going to be the one that is sensitive! At another lab with a less patient attendant I had an MRI done on my arm to see if the damage in had been repaired by surgery. Well the MRI caused my arm to twitch uncontrollably. The technician was so irritated telling me to hold still even though I kept trying to explain to her that it was not me. When the MRI starts pulsating I start twitching.
Now here is the scary part. Two weeks ago I went for my first brain MRI At the Open MRI, my favorite one. I kept falling off into these trance like states. Then during the last round when it was doing the whole pulsing thing My eyes start dancing in my head, jumping around following the magnets and I see the bright lights you see if you put pressure on closed eyes, and my hands and feet start twitching. I thought I was going to have a seizure. I can tell you exactly how many magnets were in use where they were and what they were doing. call me crazy if you want to. The tech looked at me like I was crazy, I told her that the MRI made my eyes twitch and water and that my eyelids had started twitching and how annoying that is. and my eyelids are still twitching. I go to the neurologist monday, if I can hold out that long. That is how I found this thread, Trying to find out why the MRI would cause my eyes to twitch, why my eyelids would still be twitching. It can't be anything too serious, its been two weeks but at this point I am ready to remove them O.o
