severe left ankle pain

A friend suggested that I should post my message about my ankle pain on this site and see what helpful tips I get so hopefully someone out here will help me. Its been about 7 months that I have been experiencing severe left ankle pain for no apparent reason right by the ankle joint. I did not sprain, brake or injure my foot in any way but all of a sudden my left ankle starting throbbing as though someone was trying to break my foot apart from my ankle. Sometimes there is severe swelling around the ankle, the swelling comes and goes all by itself. The pain has remained the same whether swollen or not. I have not changed diet and this pain has been a mystery to me. I've had x-rays none of which show any broken bones. I consulted a podiatrist who thought I might have arthritis and prescribed naproxen which is an anti inflammatory but does not deal with the pain and my foot is not swollen all the time. Sometimes its so painful that I cannot walk or even put an ounce of pressure on my left foot. I've experienced many sleepless nights from the pain. When it's at its worst there is no position I can sit in that does not hurt. I take Aleve to ease the pain every now and then but even that does not help when its throbbing at 100%. The pain lasts for a few days then goes away for about a week or so and returns at the same strength. I sit behind a desk all day at work. I have a foot rest to elevate it while at work and I do the same when I get home but this does not seem to help either. I sincerely wish I knew what the problem and solution is. I'd like to work out but pressure on my foot has halted all my exercise habits. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
We have a couple of message boards that you may find helpful in trying to find some community input into your chronic ankle pain problems:
Exercise and Fitness with Rich Weil board
Arthritis and Joint Pain Support Group board
as well as use the WebMD search engine to read more about an ankle injury.
You may also want to think about getting a second opinion from another doctor if your first doctor is unable to help you further.
Good luck!
- Annie

I have been having a shape pain on my right outer ankle for no apparent reason. It comes about every 10-15 minutes. I want to go to the doctor but I have a feeling that they will only say nothing is wrong. What can I do?

Go ahead and go to your doctor. Have you checked the fit of your shoes though? Our fitness expert Rich Weil often recommends getting your shoe fit checked by experts when having foot pain like you describe. It often seems to happen with older shoes that are well worn. The support wears down.

I have the same exact thing going on...this is actually why I came to this site. I work at home on the computer as well, and sometimes have sciatica and my legs or arms are numb. I had broke this foot a few years ago, but was not sure if it was realted because my pain is in a completely different area. I am overweight and do not know if this could be the problem. I just know that the pain is terrible and I cannot function when it is acting up. Does your pain travel up your leg as well?? Mine travels up the outside of my calf about 6 inches. I am wondering if the post about checking your shoes will work. Have you tried anything?? I am just wondering if you have any new suggestions???

mine is exactly like yours, outer left ankle no reason - i use an elastic support, wear books, rub it frequently, keep it raised a bit most of the time and limit walking. going to the doctor tomorrow monday. my problem only appeared last friday.

I have nearly the same problem, which has been going on for at least 10 months, I've been thru xrays, physical therapy, MRI and the orthopedist could not find anything wrong- so what causes such severe pain? I see you posted 4 years ago, have you ever found what is wrong? Are you out of pain?

I started having the exact same problem one week ago and it has not left. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia but I have not had pains in my feet like this before. I take NSAID pain relievers and the only one that seems to help most is the generic backache relief from Walgreens. I am 57 and walk at least 3 miles everyday until this past month because I had cosmetic surgery. Sometimes the pain is just a throbbing ache and I feel little electrical like surges, not pain but sort of like my foot is trying to go to sleep and then the aching pains start again. If you take an NSAID always eat something because if you have a sensitive stomach it can cause stomach problems.

I have the exact same symptoms and its making me crazy. Mine started about a month ago prior to having knee surgery. I have tried icing it, massage and elevating and nothing makes it feel better. I, too, think that going to the doctor will make me look like I'm crazy. The pain van be really intense. Has anyone found out what it could be? I'm having anxiety over this.

I have the same issue. I sprained my left ankle 8 years ago. The pain level when it is throbbing is almost as intense as the moment I sprained it.
When its in full roar, 5 days so far, it throbs as frequently as every 17 seconds. I cannot find any meds, painkillers, or position that I can put it in that will give comfort. It is bad enough that it is causing problems with my sleep. I had an MRI for this a few years ago and it came up empty.
It has nothing to do with my footwear or recent activity. I thought it could even be a blood clot, but there is NO swelling, no discoloration. Rubbing it does NOTHING. Ice packs do NOTHING. Surely someone out there knows what this is? I feel like the medical community is sooo clueless sometimes.
