did anyone else have issues with family members when going through the adoption process?

I was adopted at 16 by a relative. We didn't have any issues with anyone in the family everyone was happy that my mom was adopting me she had custody of me for 9 years prior to her adopting me. Now I am walking in my mom's shoes. I have custody of my husbands niece and I am in the process of adopting her. We have had custody of her for almost 2 years and she is only 3 years old. Unlike my family, that was very supportive, my husbands family is against it. Don't get me wrong half of his family is for it while the other half are becoming a nightmare to be around. I have had to cut my niece's mom out of the picture because she is really hostile and aggressive towards me and in all honesty she would rarely ever ask about her daughter and would call me most the time just to threaten me. I love my daughter with all my heart and I want to do the right things, and in my opinion right now it is not safe for her to have contact with her bio mom but I also don't want to cause or great division between my husband and his family member. Anyway... has anyone else gone through this while adopting another family members child? Does anyone have any advice?

    Hello Tate,

I am experiencing very similar negativity from my Husbands family members.

Our niece was taken from her parents at 3 days of age and placed in Foster care. My Husband and I volunteered to take the little Angel into our home and care for her until her parents satisfied the courts, to obtain custody of her.

After our application and other requirements were approved ...we received Her with open arms, hearts, necessities, the whole Loving works.

*******Needless to say from the very beginning of the process, my Husbands family took their stance.... leave it alone, let her stay in Foster care.

Well we now see why they were so adamant about leaving her..... the parents failed miserably......

We as Adoptive parents have to keep in mind the betterment of/for the child. In different family dynamics that can mean many different things.
