    Eat Broccoli (or Bok Choy), Beat Breast Cancer?

    Are you a fan of broccoli or bok choy? Have you added any foods to your diet since your diagnosis?

    It has been known that eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts etc. areextremely beneficial for women with estrogen positive breast cancer.
    There are also supplements available for those of you who do not like these vegetables or do not want to eat huge quantities.
    I take a supplement called DIM expressly for the benefits of cruciferous vegetables.
    The brand I take is BioResponse DIM which does have some soy in it - but not a large amount. You can check out their website for more information. I believe they are in Phase II or Phase III studies about the benefit of DIM for women with breast cancer.

    One of my friends steams broccoli, mushes it up, freezes it in ice cube trays and puts it into smoothies. A supplement sounds much easier...Thanks for the info!

    There is also a soy free DIM product made by Nature's Way.

    Yes, Haylen, I eat Broccoli all the time. It is the first plant to go into my garden in the early spring. Haven't tried Bokchoy tho. Perhaps I will get some plants. Maybe my dumb slugs won't like it. One can only hope.

    I can't think of any food I have added as I always ate a lot of veggies and fruits.

    Yes I love broc eat it all the time alone, i stews, soups and just about everything I cook. Plus a lot of other good for you veggies. But does it also help if you are triple neg oh well even if it doesn't it can't hurt right.

    Hi, Haylen. I include one of the cru. veggies once or twice a day. Broccoli is the easiest, because it seems to be part of salads/snacks at home or most restaurants. I have learned to include these veggies in my turkey sandwiches--kale or a cabbage leaf instead of lettuce; in my tuna sandwiches--chopped radishes or chopped cauliflower. The more you throw into the tuna the better it tastes! I love mayo, but try to use mustard in my sandwiches. When cooking beans (also highly recommended) I throw in some collard greens after they are cooked. For breakfast I am not shy about throwing in whatever veggie I have on hand into my scrambled eggs or quesadillas.
    I have bought bok choy but it wilted within three days of purchase and I never did try it. I downloaded a list of the crucif/ veggies and carry it around with me when I shop. There are still a bunch that I have not tried but hope to get around to.
    I do feel really good, and my nails and hair have improved wonderfully.
    Something else that I eat nightly is yogurt. I don't like the texture, but recognize its health benefits, so I throw a bunch of walnuts in and it becomes a treat. I also put yogurt into my smoothies, which I make with a banana and a handful of blueberries. Food has become an adventure as I try to include the most helpful stuff to fight Nasty C. During the day I am home by myself, so I have lots of time to get creative.

    I am going to look into DIM, as my daughter doesn't eat enough veggies as a busy mother and teacher. She takes vitamins, and the DIM sounds like a pretty good substitute for not having the time or patience to eat "the right stuff". Thanks for the tip!

    I know they say to eat lots of veggies but I do wonder if eating them all helps other cancers as well. I have always had a small problem when they say studies have found that eating veggies everyday can help your fight in not getting cancer or help to get rid of it, hope I said that right. My mother was the Queen of eating veggies, if it was from out of the garden she ate it. It did not stop her cancer, she did not have BC - she had multiple myeloma. (sp) But I do agree that eating plenty of fresh fruit and veggies is very good for you.

    The benefit for estrogen positive breast cancer comes from eating cruciferous vegetables - not all vegetables. Cruciferous veggies have substances in them that helps the body metabolize estrogen into the "good" form that doesn't cause bc cells to grow. Other forms of estrogen are taken up by the cancer cells and they continue to grow. It is thought that you would have to consume many pounds of cruciferous vegetables each day to get this benefit.
    That is why there is a pill called DIM - diindolylmethane is on the market and the ACS is studying it in clinical trials.
