    Seniors May Keep Falls a Secret

    "Many seniors don't tell their doctors they've had a fall because they're worried they'll be told they can't live on their own anymore, a physician says.

    Millions of Americans aged 65 and older fall every year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But, fewer than half tell their doctor, the researchers noted."


    From chronic health conditions to certain medications (such as antidepressants) to loose cords, throw rugs, and poor lighting, identify which falling hazards may be present in your home.


    Has your loved one fallen and failed to tell you or his/her doctor? Have you had a discussion about falls and falling hazards? Do you have any tips to help prevent falls in the home?

    This is a good resource that I hope other see.

    I have a few tips on preventing falls.

    Put better lighting up. Even little sticky battery powered tap lights can be better than nothing. Keep lightbulbs updated.

    Make sure there aren't any cords or wrinkled carpets crossing hallways. If a carpet needs to be stuck down, there are mats for that.

    Declutter the house. Help the elder get rid of boxes or other extra stuff, try to motivate them to help, even a bit, so they don't feel forced into it. Keep walkways clear.

    Make sure shoes have good soles, walkers are in good repair, and grab bars are properly installed. Even a non skid mat in the tub can be a help. Sturdy furniture is also good to have if possible.

    If possible, have the senior do balance exercises, or gentle strength training. Start early so they maintain better strength and health later. I'll be doing that myself as I get older.

    If there are side effects from medications, talk to the doctor (or more likely the pharmacist) about rethinking the pill stack or taking them in a way to minimize dizziness or sleepiness.

    Finally, a good diet with good nutrition is best - if at all possible (and I know, it's usually not), a healthy weight and the right vitamins and minerals can lessen the effects of a fall or make them less likely to happen.

    Talk to the doctor (if possible) about what should happen in the event of a fall. A plan in place, where everybody knows what will happen, might reduce some anxiety.
