    Transitioning back to normal diet?

    I'm new here (and with ulcerative colitis), does anyone have any tips or hints at how and when to reintroduce fibre back into a diet? I understand IBD is very individual, but any information would be greatly appreciated! The discussions and replies have been very helpful.

    It really depends on how well you are doing with medications. I find fiber from vegetables-particularly raw vegetables and citrus tough-so those are usually last. (and never ever ever popcorn for me and even things made with corn meal are often a problem-even when in good shape.)

    I generally start with something easy-like a plain oatmeal or cheerios. Add it back one ingredient at a time-many people with IBD have gluten intolerance so that can be mistaken for a problem handling fiber-when it is that particular fiber.

    I hope you're not planning on going back to eating the way you used to, because that would be a mistake. There are foods you're not going to be able to eat without suffering for it.

    Now that I've made you depressed, it's not all that bad. There are plenty of foods that I eat now that I never used to before I had ulcerative colitis (17 years now). For the time being I'd suggest keeping your fibre, fat, dairy, and acidic food levels really low. Anything else you can experiment with, but like Louise said do it with simple easy foods - and take it very slow.

    Thank-you for the tips. I'm 20 and because this is my first "flare-up," it's all been somewhat overwhelming. To have the opportunity to communicate with people who have been through this is very encouraging. Thanks again, and I look forward to getting to know you all!

    I know what you mean about overwhelming. When I first got sick I had no one to talk to about it. This place is such a lifesaver - knowing that I'm not the only one going through this helps so much (even if I do spend most of my time in lurk mode).

    I poked around and found a starter diet that I've posted on here before. Some of it you're bound to react to, some of it you might not, and there are likely foods not listed that you have trouble with. That's one of the fun things about dealing with something that doesn't have a set diet beyond "don't eat anything that aggravates your condition" - like that helps...

    * eat smaller meals at more frequent intervals
    * avoid eating many processed foods
    * avoid citrus fruit and anything highly acidic
    * reduce the amount of rich, greasy and fried foods
    * limit consumption of milk and milk products
    * restrict your intake of high-fibre foods
    * cut back on sugary foods
    * avoid alcohol (esp beer)

    I'm with Louise on popcorn as well. Just the thought of eating it makes me shudder. Whole corn is something I have to avoid like the plague. I can now eat corn if it's fully ground or pureed but it's taken a lot of time to get to that. You're probably better off avoiding corn for the time being.

    Thanks for all the advice! I've found that pretty much sticking to bland, boring white foods (white bread, rice, chicken, all that good stuff) has been a life saver, as well as yogurt and smoothies. It gets boring, but I'm ok with that right now! I don't really want to pay for anything really adventurous later!
