    optic atrophy
    leslee_reimer posted:
I was told that I have optic atrophy. When I asked the Doc what that was he told me it meant I have an "unhealthy eye". What is it and what can I expect because he is not very informative and always in too much of a hurry.

    Thank you
    Alan M Kozarsky, MD responded:
Optic atrophy, if you truly have it, means that you have decreased function of the optic nerve. If you think of the optic nerve as the wiring that connects your eye to your brain and allows vision to occur, the optic atrophy is damage or weakening to that wiring. If may be mild or severe. Causes include glaucoma, injury, diseases that affect your nerves, or anything that might press on the nerve on its path from the eye to the brain.

That being said, your eye doctor owes you a more complete explanation of what he or she meant.
