    10 Daily Habits to Reduce Chronic Pain

    It's a Catch-22: You're hurting, so you don't exercise; but without exercise, you may lose muscle tone and strength, making pain worse. Fortunately, even mild exercise releases endorphins, the feel-good brain chemicals that lift mood and block pain.

    Everytime I try to exercise, I end up hurting something!!! Something as simple as a walk ends up killing me later in the day! 3-5 lb dumbells: hurt my shoulder and had to get PT. Walking: twisted my ankle/knee. stretching: pulled knee and hip out of socket (stretchy cartilage and ligaments) sit ups: fuggedaboudit!!! meditate? I get distracted! (it says to meditate and get distracted, so I guess I am doing something right, LOL!


    ps going to a new doctor nest week to see if I can do something to make my cartilage and ligaments more sturdy!

    What other ways have I found to reduce chronic pain??? Why, you can buy relief!! (didn't you know that??)'s sold in lots of comes in a tall bottle marked "Tequila"...all you have to do is add ice, strawberries, triple sec and sweet & sour mix in a blender and hit "blend"...and in just seconds you have instant relief. I find it actually works quicker if I add some nachos with it!!

    Exercising is so over rated. :^)

    I have FINALLY gotten back to the gym.

    The brace for my foot that the doctor designed for me is a godsend. It is literally holding my foot together and allowing me to walk on the treadmill. This is something I have never been able to do before. I have been fortunate to walk a block or two. Now, I can do alot more and it feels good! Been doing the arm machines and it is helping with the knots from fibromyalgia. Keep the weight light at first, working my way up.

    But seriously...they say a little oil quiets the squeak in most things. Maybe just a couple (say 5 minutes) of some joint working moves may help.

    Just try it BEFORE partaking in those tasty margaritas so you don't do anything crazy!! LOL

    We just need to come up with a move that incorporates slamming shots. Hmmmm....

    How about: Pour, squat, lick, slam, jump, bite, squat.

    Now there's a workout I could get used to.

    (Disclosure: This is not an actual exercise move and I'm just kidding...plz don't try this at home! LOL)

    I so agree with you. The gym is the way to go. About 3-4 yrs ago, I was going to the gym and working out 5-6 days/week. I used the elipticals, the stationary bike, some of the machines, but I liked the free weights the best. I was there so much they offered me a part time job and I took it. I was in heaven! Although I know it can be bad for us lupies, I used the tanning bed before I would workout to help ease and loosen up my achy muscles. Then I began to notice dark coloted urine and some ? weakness. Bloodwork revealed elevated muscle enzymes and my life has not been the same since. Read my recent post "overlap syndrome-negative enzymes" for the whole story. I had to quit exercising and I had to quit my job. I was so addicted to the gym. I would love to go again, but now I am so scared. Anyway,by all means exercising does help to relieve chronic pain and of course it helps with weight loss. I actually weighed less then than I did in high school.
    So keep up the good work, and cudos to you for not giving up. I just hope that I can get that brave again in the real near future. Way to go!

    Hi Pugpuppy,

    We joke about the tequila and alcohol because sometimes it does just feel good to say "forget it! I'm done trying to work at this", but in truth, alcohol is one of the worst ways to feel better. (As much as I hate to say it sometimes)

    You need a good night's sleep to help soothe the stresses pain puts on your body. Although alcohol can help you fall asleep, as it metabolizes, it promotes shallow sleep, reduces important REM sleep, and may even wake you. The result: A less restful night.

    And, a less restful night ends up in more pain and just overall yucky feeling the next day.

    Were the elevated muscle enzymes caused by doing too much exercise? What did your doctor say?

    If exercise is not something that's possible, this slideshow offers other tips too, like meditating, scheduling relaxation time, and eating healthy.

    Another way to keep your body strong is to eat a well-balanced diet. Eating right improves blood sugar, helps maintain weight, reduces heart disease risk, and aids digestion.
