My grandson who is 4yrs old lives with me (his grandmother). His mother my ex-daughter inlaw lives in another state. She doesnt get to see him because she lives to far away. She calls once every few months. He has never spent any time with her since he was 3mths old. He has recently start making up stories about her. for
example; my mon was in a wreck, and his k-3 teacher says he makes up stories in class about her. What do I do about this? The stories can really get outrageous. His father (my son) is in his life. What do we tell him?
    Love my grandson!

Be honest with him about why his parent(s) aren't in his life (age appropriate of course). Don't bad mouth them but don't make them out to be saints. Be honest with him. If we don't give them the information they will fill in the information in wild ways/ideas. He may not completely understand because all of his friends have a mom and/or dad that they live with.

My oldest daughter's dad isn't in her life. He hasn't seen her since she has been 3 weeks old. We talked about all the different kinds of families and how each is okay. There was a book (I'm sorry I don't remember the name) that we read a lot that talked about all different kinds of family dynamics.
