    Sleep Cycles

    Hi,

    I've recently been monitoring my sleep patterns and I've noticed a trend this week, and I was curious as to if anyone has any insight on these occurrences. I've read that adults need to complete 5-6 cycles a night of progressing through sleep and into deep sleep and REM and I'm understanding that is to occur uninterrupted throughout the night. However, looking at my apps statistics, I am unable to achieve the recommended amount of cycles. I sleep anywhere from 5-7 hours a night, but I am only able to achieve maybe 2 complete cycles as the rest never fully reach beyond the sleep line into deep sleep or bottom out at REM before turning back up. Is there an explanation to this occurrence? Is there any suggestions how to increase the quantity of "full" cycles? Thank you for your input.

    This article about sleep cycles says that we cycle through non-REM and REM sleep cycles 3-4 times a night , but as this article explains, we are all different in the quantity and kinds of sleep that we need (aging can contribute to lighter sleep). Keep a sleep journal to track how well you are sleeping could be a good thing for you to do -- you might even wish to share and discuss it with your doctor if you are concerned with the quality of your sleep.
